How to Reduce Your Computer Startup Time

Posted on 12:09 PM by Unknown

Microsoft's Windows 7 is a much better operating system compared to its previous versions, where the startup time alone took a long time just to start the basic programs. Nevertheless, when you add more and more programs in Windows 7 it will tend to slow up your computer. To reduce or improve your computer startup time, Locker Gnome gives excellent tips such as the following:

  • Adding a Solid State drive (SSD) instead of regular SATA drives, SSDs are much faster
  • Remove Ghosted drives that you no longer use, you can do this yourself as mentioned in the article or use a program like GhostBuster.
  • Remove the programs you don't need to start during startup by using MSCONFIG utility in the computer. Type "MSCONFIG" in Start search menu, it will open the utility, go to "Startup" tab (as shown in picture above) and disable the programs you don't need.
  • Defragment the device at least once a week according to Locker Gnome.

I am trying the steps 2 to 4, will keep you posted how it works.

Do you use any other steps to improve the speed of your computer?

Free Kindle Book: Make More, Worry Less: Secrets from 18 Extraordinary People Who Created a Bigger Income and a Better Life eBook: Wes Moss

Make More, Worry Less: Secrets from 18 Extraordinary People Who Created a Bigger Income and a Better Life

This is a management book like the Dale Carnegie series, it is free for a limited time, original price $19.99.

Make More, Worry Less: Secrets from 18 Extraordinary People Who Created a Bigger Income and a Better Life eBook: Wes Moss: Kindle Store
Moss proposes fresh ways to succeed in a corporate environment using the four-step HUNT method he established in his first book, a primer on entrepreneurship called Starting from Scratch: Harness what you have, Underestimate your obstacles, Notice your network and Take the first (or next) step. The book's four parts cover each leg of the acronym, and each of the 18 chapters are tied to a specific individual's success story on the frontlines of such companies as Ogilvy Public Relations, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Warner Music, Coca-Cola and GE. Narratives are mined for principles ("Keep it simple") and practical tips (put off casual reading in favor of "thinking through the coming meeting") while keeping a steady eye on the big picture-moving forward and building momentum. Conversational and straightforward, this guide to sensible career advancement should prove useful and encouraging for those new to the workforce, as well as those stuck on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder.

Your Brain and Business: The Neuroscience of Great Leaders

The highly rated management book normally costs $34.99 is free today in Amazon.

Harvard psychiatrist and executive coach Srinivasan S. Pillay illuminates the rapidly-emerging links between modern brain science and the corner office. What does neuroscience have to do with leadership? Everything. Recent advances in brain science and neuroimaging can dramatically improve the way leaders work with colleagues to drive successful change. As the brain is increasingly examined in the context of personal and organizational development, remarkable insights are being uncovered: insights that are leading to powerful new strategies for improving business execution. Pillay reveals six powerful ways that brain science can be used by today’s executives, and presents powerful new interventions for coaches who want to help their clients overcome common leadership problems. Discover how to use positive, “strengths-based” approaches to encourage the brain to learn… how the fascinating neuroscience of social intelligence can help leaders encourage more effective relationships… how to promote innovation and intuition, and overcome intangible vulnerabilities in leaders’ brains… how to transform the “idea” of change into crisp, timely execution… and much more. Clear App - a 'To Do' productivity app for iPhone & iPad

Posted on 7:43 AM by Unknown

Clear app is a nicely designed and an easy to do app for iPhone and iPad. You can add or remove or group tasks easily with pinch and swipe strokes. It costs $0.99 only in iTunes. The app has various shades of colors to show the degree of importance of the tasks.

The disadvantage though it doesn't sync with Google Tasks or other Calendars, may be they will add this feature in their future versions.

Check also another great To Do app for iOS, TeuxDeux.

Clear is available only for iOS but if you need to use a similar app for Android phones, you can try Any.do (free), which does the above things plus it syncs (manually) with Google Tasks.

Send Documents from PC to Kindle Reader or Kindle App

Posted on 5:34 AM by Unknown

This "Send to Kindle" feature was introduced a few months ago but the documents were restricted to be sent to Kindle Reader only, it didn't allow to be read in your Kindle apps in smartphone or tablets. Now, Amazon has added this new feature, where you can send documents to any Kindle app, be in a Smartphone (Android or iOS) or in a Tablet (Android Tablets or iPad).

I tried this feature today and I was able to send documents easily. We can send it either from the folder option by right clicking the mouse and choosing "Send to Kindle" or use the print function in documents and selecting "Send to Kindle" as shown in the below images:

Send Documents to Kindle from Folders.

Send Documents to Kindle from Application.

To do this, download the main application from Amazon from this link and select the document you want to send to your Kindle from either the folders or from the Word or other applications. Once you click the "Send to Kindle", you will be given an option to which app you want to send the documents to whether to your Smartphone, laptop or Tablets. Once you select that the document will download in the background and you can see that document in the "Docs" section in the Kindle app.

How to Protect your Payments with Google Wallet

Posted on 11:13 AM by Unknown

Google Wallet in Android phones was recently compromised by hackers, so Google is giving the following suggestions to prevent your payment cards from getting accessed by others.
1. If you are using a rooted phone, make sure you don't install Google Wallet, because it is unprotected in that OS version. In phones that Google Wallet can be used usually with Android 4.0 or higher, there is a face lock option and a pin password before you can access the payment card, in rooted phones there are no such options. Though the hackers can only access your pre-paid card option with Google, not your credit or debit cards in the wallet.
2. If you are not using a rooted phone, don't use Google Wallet yet, Google will issue a protected version soon to overcome this flaw. Google's response for this problem: "For example, to address an issue that could have allowed unauthorized use of an existing prepaid card balance if someone recovered a lost phone without a screen lock, tonight we temporarily disabled provisioning of prepaid cards. We took this step as a precaution until we issue a permanent fix soon."
If you still have concerns or any concern in the future, you can contact Google Wallet support at this link.

BioLite CampStove: Portable Stove and Gadget Charger in One

Posted on 3:06 PM by Unknown

The BioLite CampStove is a portable stove that uses sticks, twigs, or any type of burning wood rather than gas or oil. Whatever we find near the camp site we can use it in this portable stove. The unique patented stove lights up quickly and cooks items faster. According to the manufacturer's claim it uses half the wood necessary to cook and reduces emissions (which causes numerous health problems and deaths also) by over 90% . BioLite CampStove is a slightly smaller version of BioLite HomeStove, which is currently being tested in India, Kenya, Uganda and Ghana. But the most interesting part for the stove is, it has a built-in USB port, through which we can charge any phone, GPS or even light a LED lamp (not sold with this product).

According to Uncrate.com, the price for this BioLite CampStove is $130.

Why Choose the BioLite CampStove?

Forget the fuel. Our stoves cook your meals with nothing but the twigs you collect on your journey, eliminating the need for heavy, expensive, polluting petroleum gas. It’s quick to light, fast to boil and clean to use.

Charge your gadgets. By converting heat from the fire into usable electricity, our stoves will recharge your phones, lights and other gadgets while you cook dinner.

Have fun. Like a campfire, you can sit around the CampStove and watch the flames dance as you roast marshmallows and tell stories with friends.

Stay green. By using renewable resources for fuel instead of petroleum, you're reducing your carbon footprint. You'll also keep fuel canisters out of the landfill.

Be prepared. The CampStove isn't just for camping; it's great to have on hand when the power goes out in a storm or other natural disasters. You'll be able to cook and keep electronics charged while power lines are down.

Support a better world. Half the planet cooks on open fires, leading to 2 million premature deaths each year and contributing to global warming. We're using the same technology inside the CampStove to bring clean, safe energy access to families across the developing world.

You can reserve the BioLite CampStove at this link here.

Chrome Browser Beta for Android Launched

Posted on 10:00 AM by Unknown

It has been a long wait for Google Chrome browser to become available for Android OS, but I think it is worth the wait. With this new Chrome for Android Beta, you can browse and use your favorite apps, bookmarks, seamlessly across a wide variety of platforms. With Chrome for Android Beta, you can search from the URL bar just like regular Chrome browser. There is also incognito mode to browse safely.

Please note the Beta version only works for Android OS 4.0 version or higher, so others have to wait until Google makes it available for all versions.

The Beta version is also available for non-US users in countries listed here.

If it is not compatible with your Android phones or Tablets, then you can use Dolphin HD Browser which does a great job as well.
