Google Translate makes it easy to translate languages with OCR

Posted on 5:42 AM by Unknown
Google Translate has improved tremendously over the years, and with this new update you will see that it can translate languages from board signs, books, menus etc easily using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology:

Point, tap, brush and listen - Google Translate Blog: With our latest update to our Google Translate app for Android, we’re aiming to get one step closer to the Babel fish. By integrating Google Goggles’ optical character recognition (OCR) technology, we’ve made it possible for you to use the camera of your Android smartphone to input text without typing. This makes Google Translate for Android one of our most intelligent and machine learning-intensive apps. Speech recognition, handwriting recognition, OCR, and machine translation all rely on powerful statistical models built on billions of samples of data.

How to use Google Translate OCR feature?

1. Click the camera icon in Google Translate App.

2. Point the camera to the text you want to translate and either click the camera icon one more time or tap the screen.

3. Translate app will then ask you to brush the text portions you want to translate (before that choose the language pair, you can also choose them later).

4. The selected text portions are translated to the language you chose before. To change language, click the dropdown menu at the end of the languages shown.

Currently the following languages are available: Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.

More languages will become available soon to use this OCR feature.

Google Translate has become an invaluable tool to have when traveling abroad.

Free 5 invites for 'Bank Simple' bank accounts

Posted on 4:35 PM by Unknown

Update: 9 Invites available. Thanks.

I love Bank Simple much better than banks like Bank of America or Wells Fargo. It is very simple to use and very efficient. Sending Bill payments are super easy and can sync your bank account transactions with tools like Mint. You can connect the PayPal account to transfer funds. Plus there are no monthly fees and other ridiculous bank charges.

The above video shows a demo of Bank Simple. It is simple as simple as that like the name suggests.

I received 5 invites from Bank Simple, if you are interested, leave your email address in the comments section. The first five comments will get the invites. To prevent spam, leave the email address with a blank separating the “@” sign (also, the First and Last Names). The invitation I received from Bank Simple was as follows:

“You’ve been an awesome customer so far! You’ve swiped your Simple card a bunch, and maybe you’ve even sent us a bug report or chatted with our team. Whatever the case, you’re helping make Simple better every day.

Since you’ve been so great, we’d like to give you the chance to invite your friends!

Just reply to this e-mail with up to 5 names and e-mail addresses by September 28th. Your friends will get their Simple invites within the next two weeks!

Thanks again for being such a rad customer! Let us know if you have any questions.

The Team at Simple”

I would love to see the following features, which I’m sure they will be adding it soon.

1. Bank deposits directly by scanning checks
2. Direct deposits
3. Business bank accounts
4. Email notifications of transactions (so we can monitor it as the transactions take place)
5. Interest on deposits

Alamar Film Trailer

Posted on 4:03 AM by Unknown

It was recommended by one of my circles, you can watch the movie either in Netflix, if you've a subscription, or you can watch it in Amazon.

Movie review from Rotten Tomatoes:

A young boy and his father learn about living in harmony with nature in this languid drama from filmmaker Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio. A man from Mexico (Jorge Machado) travels to Italy and falls in love with a beautiful local woman (Roberta Palombini). Their feelings for one another are strong, but they prove to be short lived, and when they decide to beak up after the birth of their son Natan, he returns to Mexico while she stays in Italy and takes primary custody of the child. However, the father strives to remain a presence in his son's life, and the boy visits his father at least once a year. As the five-year-old Natan travels to Mexico, his father has joined the family' fishing operation near the coral reefs of Banco Chinchorro. Living in an elevated cottage near the shore, Natan and his family devote their summer to an idyllic existence, spending their days catching the plentiful fish and observing the wildlife, and their nights sitting by the fire and admiring the stars. To the father, this simple life teaches an important lesson of existing in peace with the natural world, and Natan comes to see himself as being as much a part of this environment as the fish, the waterfowl and the seaweed. Alamar (aka To The Sea) was the first solo directorial credit for cinematographer Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

How to Shrink PDF Files by Half or More?

Posted on 10:43 AM by Unknown
There are two methods to shrink PDF files, the easiest way is with the use of PDF Printer Driver using Adobe Acrobat PDF software. The other method is using Adobe PDF Optimizer, which has even more finer tuning techniques.

Open the PDF file and click the Print button in Adobe PDF, and scroll to the Adobe PDF Printer from the several printer options you might have. An example is shown below:

I was able to reduce one file from 594KB to 224KB and then the other from 110KB to 42KB. You can only do this once, if you try to print the shrinked file again, there won't be any reductions.

I haven't tried other PDF software to see whether it works there, but I think it should work. If you've tested it out, please leave a comment.

The second method is little bit detailed, you can check that at the original link here.

Weather Forecast data added to Google Calendar

Posted on 11:14 AM by Unknown

Previously, Google enabled this weather function in Google Calendar, but only showed the highs and lows of the day, but now they have added more weather details to the Calendar as shown in the picture above. It is a good setting to have to see a quick snapshot of the weather for that day in the location near you.

If you haven't enabled this setting, you can do so by doing the following steps:

How to enable the Weather feature

To view weather forecasts in Google Calendar, simply follow these steps:

  • Click the gear icon at the top of any Google Calendar page.
  • Click Calendar settings
  • Select the General tab
  • In the 'Location' section, enter your desired location information (e.g., 'Los Altos, CA' or '94024')
  • In the 'Show weather based on my location' section, select either °F or °C
  • Click Save
Check also how to add your favorite sports team to the Google Calendar.

Google Drive for mobile adds more new features for iOS and Android

Posted on 12:49 PM by Unknown

Google Drive (previously Google Docs) is improving at a slow pace, now they have added better multi-user file editing option, viewing presentations, etc.

"Updates for iOS

Starting today, if you’re using the Drive app on your iOS device you can also edit Google documents, just as you can with the Android app. From your iPhone or iPad, you can create a new document, edit an existing one or format text. And just like on your computer, you’ll be able to see other people’s edits instantly as they’re made.

You’ll also notice other new improvements to the iOS Drive app. For example, you can now view Google presentations on your iPhone or iPad, including speaker notes, full-screen mode and the ability to swipe between slides. You can also create new folders, move files into folders and upload stuff (like photos and videos) from your device directly in the Drive app.

Updates for Android

We’re also updating the Drive app for Android phones and tablets today. You can now add comments, reply to existing comments and view tables in your Google documents. And you’ll have the same new abilities to view presentations and organize your stuff as your friends with iPhones do."

How to Make Screen Rotate or Change to Landscape Mode in Nexus 7

Posted on 11:45 AM by Unknown
Stunning Display
In the Nexus 7 tablet, the screen doesn't rotate like other Android phones or in iPad or iPhone, it stays only in portrait mode except for a few applications. Only the YouTube videos and few other programs operate in landscape mode automatically (like shown above).

Weather
To make the screen rotate freely, do the following steps:

1. Go to "Settings" at the top of the screen
2. Go to "System" --> "Accessibility"
3. Enable the "Auto-rotate screen" as shown below.

With the above settings you can then rotate your screen anyway you like. There are other paid apps that does this job or some rooting options, but the below method can be used for rooted or not-rooted Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean Android OS.
