Word definition gets better in Google Now and in Google search

Posted on 9:08 AM by Unknown

I check definitions of words constantly to make sure it conveys the right meaning, Google has been of great help. A word search of "define: impeccable" in Google Now in smartphones or in Google search gives a succinct summary of the word and it just got better with Google’s updates as shown in the picture above. The new definition page shows, synonyms, antonyms, pronunciation, usage, adjectives, word origin, a graph showing the usage of that particular word over the years.

Here’s another example: "define: right".

How to remove scratches in a LCD Monitor with Chapstick?

Posted on 4:13 PM by Unknown
My friend had a big scratch on her iMac screen and was worried about costs associated with changing the screen, so I tried to find a simple and cost-effective method to do it ourselves. Thanks to YouTube search, I found this video and applied chapstick across the scratches and wiped them off with a paper tissue, a few minutes later they were gone for good. I used Nivea chapstick but I'm sure other brands might work also.

You can see the results below, there is some scratch left on the screen, but I think with two or more applications it might go way. My friend was happy with just this application.

Before with Scratches

After without scratches

Avoid spam calls to your phone with free US National Do Not Call Registry service

Posted on 9:18 AM by Unknown
I used to receive lots of annoying calls from telemarketers, with "National Do Not Call Registry" service, I was able to avoid them over the years. You can register your phone numbers (up to 3) with simple registration steps at this link https://www.donotcall.gov/register/reg.aspx.

The service requires an email address for confirmation purposes. You will receive a confirmation for each phone number, just click the link you receive to confirm the phone number. Once you register it, the telemarketers cannot call your numbers and you can report them if they violate this rule.

How to locate a lost item using Switch Words?

Posted on 12:24 PM by Unknown
I used the below Switch-words technique to retrieve lost items more than half-a-dozen times, such as a library book, important bill and headphones. I just chanted these words for about 10 times and thinking about the lost item at the same time and was able to locate the items soon after.

This solution is from the book, Bach Flower Remedies by Naran S. Balakumar. Though the book suggests us to take Bach Flower Remedies, even saying those words alone worked out for me.

To locate a Lost item say the following three Switch Words:

"CERATO, ROCK WATER, CHESTNUT BUD" and the Lost item name.

A Timelapse of The Colorado Wildfires

Posted on 8:29 AM by Unknown

Colorado is currently experiencing some of the largest wildfires in the state's history. In June, I visited the Bruce Spruce Ranch a little ways outside of Pagosa Springs and watched as the Windy Pass, West Fork, and Papoose wildfires burned thousands of acres of forest. I have never seen such a powerful event up close like this before, it was truly humbling.

Please visit whoismatt.com/pagosatimelapse and download this film in high definition. The video itself is 3 Gigabytes in size and looks amazing.

Video: Handsome Furs - What We Had

Posted on 3:31 PM by Unknown

I just heard this beautiful song from the new series "Low Winter Sun".

Handsome Furs - What We Had:

"It's cold
a plain diamond
nobody's here, just empty space
It's all moving, breathing
stuck to the ceiling, don't mean a thing

and what we had don't mean a thing
and what we had is already gone

it's all
a plain diamond
nobody's here, just empty space

they're all our eyes are saucered to see
as if hands might float right down from above
and change this place
nobody here, don't mean a thing

and what we had don't mean a thing
and what we had is already gone

I sit outside with the rain now
and time rolls slow
I sit outside with the rain
and time rolls slow
but they may never shut off
but they may never shut off"

How to mask Pin Numbers when you type in ATM or in your Mobile screen login

Posted on 10:07 AM by Unknown

When you go to the ATMs or type pin numbers in mobile phones, use the second technique, just pretend you're typing other numbers besides the main numbers.

Instead of going in sequence in the password for e.g. 1234:

1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4

Use a random sequence like this:

 1 -> 9 -> 2 -> 3 -> 7 -> 4

to confuse those who're watching what you type.

How to fix 'Your Profile Cannot Be Opened" Google Chrome Error in Windows OS

Posted on 8:17 AM by Unknown

I had this error for the past few days, found out the Chrome folder was corrupted. I deleted the profiles, uninstalled and re-installed the Chrome, and tried few other techniques, none of them worked except for the following method worked.

  • Go to Start menu C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Google\  (for Windows) (replace the above username with yours without the brackets)
  • Delete the "Chrome" folder or move the "Chrome" folder to another place.
  • Uninstall the Chrome app and reinstall Chrome browser again.

Your new Chrome browser will start without an error, you've to re-login and create new profiles. This seems to be the only way for now. I tried different methods, finally this worked.

How to detect fake dollar currency bill?

Posted on 7:03 AM by Unknown
My friend recently received a counterfeit note during his yard sale, so I was looking for a currency detector pen used by cashiers in restaurants. But it seems like there is an easier way to find whether the US dollar bill is fake or not.

Look for the following two things:

(a) If you look at the currency bill under bright lights you will see a trademark (duplicate image) of the former President (Ben Franklin, other bills have different Presidents) on the right side of the bill as shown.

(b) There is a line with words which says the amount of the bill on the left side of the bill.

If you see both of the above, then it is real currency otherwise return the currency bill back.

Also, check the video below for a demo of this:

Search emails, calendar, documents in Gmail

Posted on 10:33 AM by Unknown

Before we were able to search only the emails in Gmail account, now we can also search calendar, documents within Gmail to find related information.

"As part of field trial we opened in October, it became possible to instantly see your relevant emails, Google Drive files, Calendar events, and more when you search in Gmail. Those of you who participated in the field trial told us that you like the time-saving convenience of searching for all your stuff from one place, and over the coming week, we'll be rolling out this feature in English to all U.S. users. Now you can find what you're looking for faster right in Gmail."

This is similar to what CloudMagic has been doing for years, besides CloudMagic is a better tool searches multiple Gmail accounts, multiple Google App accounts, Twitter, Facebook accounts and more as well. I'm not sure whether Google will have those features for a while.

How to block or stop unwanted calls from Google+ Hangouts

Posted on 7:00 AM by Unknown
I was getting a lot of calls this morning trying to push one product after another. I found it was coming from Google+ Hangouts feature, which has a new feature making phone calls and video calls easier. To block unwanted calls do the following:

Go to "Accounts" --> and go to "Who can Hangout with you" --> Click "Customize" and  Select the circles and change the option to "Send a request"

Initially, the setting is default to "Hangout with you", so we need change it to either "Hangout with you" or "Send request".

To change to either setting, just hover over the grey button at the end of the circles as shown.

Otherwise it seems any one can reach you. The guys were trying to sell Payday loan, auto insurance etc., even though I have this number in Donotcall.gov. Luckily, I have block feature in Google Voice, can block these calls but if you get more than 100 calls it will become cumbersome, the above settings can prevent us to block each caller.

Update: Also, do the same in the hangout apps you download for your PC or Mac.

Google Keep gets new Chrome Extension and works offline

Posted on 11:07 AM by Unknown

Google Keep comes in handy sometimes, you can use it to write notes or add To-do lists. I sometimes save the links in Google Keep via the share feature in Android to read the articles later.

To download the Google Keep extension for Chrome click the link here.

Last month, Google Keep launched to help you quickly jot down ideas and keep track of things while on the go with your Android device or on the web. Today, with the launch of a new Chrome app, Google Keep is even easier to access on your computer using Chrome.

The Google Keep Chrome app launches in its own window, so you can create notes, cross out your to-do lists, and attach photos to tasks while you work on other things. And if you don’t have an internet connection, don’t fret: the Chrome app works offline because we all know that ideas (big and small) can be sparked at any time.

Free Management Ebook from Amazon: Firms of Endearment: How World-Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose

Posted on 9:10 AM by Unknown

"Firms of Endearment: How World-Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose" by Jagdish N. Sheth, Rajendra S. Sisodia, David B. Wolfe, priced at $39.99 is available for free for a limited time in Amazon. It is good business book to read.

"Today’s best companies get it. From Costco® to Commerce Bank, Wegmans to Whole Foods®: they’re becoming the ultimate value creators. They’re generating every form of value that matters: emotional, experiential, social, and financial. And they’re doing it for all their stakeholders. Not because it’s “politically correct”: because it’s the only path to long-term competitive advantage.

These are the Firms of Endearment. Companies people love doing business with. Love partnering with. Love working for. Love investing in. Companies for whom “loyalty” isn’t just real: it’s palpable, and driving unbeatable advantages in everything from marketing to recruitment.

You need to become one of those companies. This book will show you how. You’ll find specific, practical guidance on transforming every relationship you have: with customers, associates, partners, investors, and society. If you want to be great—truly great—this is your blueprint.

We’re entering an Age of Transcendence, as people increasingly search for higher meaning in their lives, not just more possessions. This is transforming the marketplace, the workplace, the very soul of capitalism. Increasingly, today’s most successful companies are bringing love, joy, authenticity, empathy, and soulfulness into their businesses: they are delivering emotional, experiential, and social value–not just profits.

Firms of Endearment illuminates this, the most fundamental transformation in capitalism since Adam Smith. It’s not about “corporate social responsibility”: it’s about building companies that can sustain success in a radically new era. It’s about great companies like IDEO and IKEA®, Commerce Bank and Costco®, Wegmans and Whole Foods®: how they earn the powerful loyalty and affection that enables truly breathtaking performance.

This book is about gaining “share of heart,” not just share of wallet. It’s about aligning stakeholders’ interests, not just juggling them. It’s about building companies that leave the world a better place. Most of all, it’s about why you must do all this, or risk being left in the dust... and how to get there from wherever you are now."

If you're in a rush (or want to call USPS during non-business working hours) calling the 1-800 number for USPS (1-800-ASK-USPS), visit online and enter the package information details here:

https://redelivery.usps.com/redelivery/

and enter the details from the peach-colored slip that was left in your door or mail box, in all the four sections:

1.) What's your delivery address?
2.) What is the article number?
3.) When did we try delivering it?
4.) When do you want to get your items?

After you fill the second section, it will give a false message and ask you to go to https://redelivery.usps.com/redelivery/, when you're already there. Just ignore the message and fill the rest of the sections.

However, USPS may not be able to redeliver all the missed packages, in those cases you need to go the nearest shipping center (not the nearest post office). To find the nearest shipping center, either call 1-800-ASK-USPS or go to link and choose "Pickup Services" option: https://tools.usps.com/go/POLocatorAction.action

House of Cards - Series - Theme Song Extended

Posted on 8:18 AM by Unknown

If you like "Ides of March" movie, then you will love this series. I'm glad it was on Netflix and didn't appear on regular TV channels, otherwise they would have distorted the story. Kevin Spacey and others have done a remarkable job.

Plus it is an entire series, we can watch it without long months of delays. This show is based on a BBC series.

It is available in Netflix: http://goo.gl/osHja

House of Cards (UK version): http://goo.gl/ypYZl

House of Cards (Album): http://goo.gl/a0E9g

If you like political shows, also watch Borgen (Denmark) one of the best series in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borgen_(TV_series)

I don't really like political shows, we all know how despicable the politicians are except for a few,  but the above two are worth watching.

Here is the House of Cards Trailer:

Best Can Opener - Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter

Posted on 3:19 PM by Unknown
Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter
I bought this Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter, it is a great product as advertised compared to other conventional can opener. This uses a different principle (as seen in the video) cuts the cans from the edge rather than from the top and cuts the tops smoothly without any sharp edges. The top part can even be used again if there are any leftovers by closing the top until the can is used again. Don't leave it long in the fridge however, we're supposed to use the contents right away once they're opened.

Main advantages are:

a) it is easier to clean,
b) doesn't come in contact with the food,
c) there are no sharp edges, so it is safer to use,
d) durable design,
e) prices ($14 to $16) are comparable to other can openers.

Initially, you will find it awkward cutting the cans this way but you will see after a few repetitions it does a great job.

There is another can opener from the same Swiss company, Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Master Opener, which does more than opening the cans, it can open the bottles and other food containers as shown in the video below.

Add video to blogs with Easyvideoembeds, an YouTube alternative

Posted on 3:26 PM by Unknown

If you're looking for an YouTube alternative and want to share videos with others, you can use Easyvideoembeds.com. After you add a video (.mp4 or .ogg format), it gives a simple code which you can then embed in your site.

How it works:

1. Upload a video file that you want to embed (.ogg or .mp4 format)

2. EasyVideoEmbeds gives you code to embed the uploaded video on your website

It is simple, but if you want to delete or edit the title and contents of the video, then YouTube is a much better choice. Also, there doesn't seem to be a delete feature if you want to delete the video later, maybe the new site will add this feature and others.

Canadian Mother writes heartbreaking post about her daughter's suicide, bullying

Posted on 7:44 AM by Unknown

If you're in Facebook here is her full letter, if not in Facebook you can read below via Daily Kos: http://goo.gl/lufUF

This page is dedication to my wonderful Daughter who was smart, beautiful, and full of life with a deep compassion to animals. The Person Rehtaeh once was all changed one dreaded night in November 2011. She went with a friend to another’s home. In that home she was raped by four young boys…one of those boys took a photo of her being raped and decided it would be fun to distribute the photo to everyone in Rehtaeh’s school and community where it quickly went viral. Because the boys already had a “slut” story, the victim of the rape Rehtaeh was considered a SLUT. This day changed the lives of our family forever. I stopped working that very day and we have all been on this journey of emotional turmoil ever since.

Rehtaeh was suddenly shunned by almost everyone she knew, the harassment was so bad she had to move out of her own community to try to start anew in Halifax. She struggled emotionally with depression and anger .Her thoughts of suicide began and fearing for her life, she placed herself in a hospital in an attempt to get help. She stayed there for almost 6weeks. The bullying continued, her friends were not supportive. She needed a friend and eventually along the way a few new friends came along and a few old friends came forward.

Rae then moved back to Dartmouth, always with the concern of what will be said about her, said to her. Again, she was the one raped…she was the victim being victimized over and over again. One year later the police conclude their investigation to state that it comes down to “he said, she said” they believed the boys raped her but the proof in a court of law was difficult to gather. The photo sent…”well Leah, that’s a community issue!” The bullying never stopped but she learned to keep her head high and surrounded herself with the ones who truly cared. I will have eternal gratitude for her friends Jenna, Dawid and Mike for the past few months. They are the ones she leaned on for strength and courage.

Just two weeks ago she stopped smoking pot, started looking for work and with the help of one of her teachers and a new therapist she was making progress. When the calming effects of the pot subsided, her feelings of anger began to re-surface and she was struggling. I will say that she has told me many times that “Mom, although I often feel like killing myself…I could never do that to you because you would be devastated.”
This past week she was having lots of mood swings and her boyfriend Mike and Jenna wore the brunt of it but Thursday April 4th she had a great day, made plans for the weekend etc. Later that evening she had an outburst, acted on that impulse and locked herself in the bathroom. And to stop any rumours from spreading…. She acted on an impulse but I truly in my heart of heart do not feel she meant to kill herself. By the time I broke into the bathroom it was too late. My beautiful girl had hung herself and was rushed to the hospital where she remained on life support until last night.

This page is to celebrate the Rehtaeh we knew and loved. One of Rae’s pet peeves was that when someone passed away, suddenly they were liked and people cared. She wouldn’t want people who bullied her, talked about her, put negative statuses about her over the past year, and sent awful messages to be on this page. I know who you are because everyone message was a pain we shared together, there was not much that she didn’t tell me or show me. People were so very cruel to her so if you were one that felt it ok to bully someone in so much pain –STAY AWAY. Rehtaeh is gone today because of The four boys that thought that raping a 15yr old girl was OK and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun. Secondly, All the bullying and messaging and harassment that never let up are also to blame. Lastly, the justice system failed her. Those are the people that took the life of my beautiful girl. Rehtaeh stood up for others, showed compassion to animals and people. She was an amazing artist .She made my life complete. When Rehtaeh was born I dedicated everything to her and promised her the world. Others in this world took that away from her.

Posted on 6:26 AM by Unknown
One reader asked me how we can add fonts in Presentation, here is a short article about it. Adding fonts in Google Drive Documents is easy, if you know how to add fonts in Google Drive Documents then it is the same process in Google Drive Presentations also.

Click the font menu as shown and click "Add Fonts" to add the new font or fonts.

Once you click "Add Fonts' you will see more than 400 different fonts to choose from, select those you need.

If you want to make these presentation available online, choose a font that everyone can see it, not all fonts are available in their computers.

Posted on 8:35 AM by Unknown
If your phone is locked, then to access music player controls, one has to log-in to do it, with this new Pandora update, there is no need to log-in. As seen in the picture above we can either pause the song or go to the next song.

Google Music Android App has this feature for a long time, good to see this feature is also available in Pandora Radio Android App.

One thing is missing in this Pandora update, the bookmark feature, hopefully they will add it in the near future.

Weather Travel Fashion - a What to Wear Android app

Posted on 3:19 PM by Unknown

Weather Travel Fashion (WTF) Android app (available for iOS also in iTunes link) works as advertised tells us exactly what clothes to wear (for both sexes) based on the current weather conditions. The app gives us different choices to choose from based on temperature, wind, UV and humidity conditions.

The Travel feature is not working now but the other main weather & fashion tabs are working fine. Nice app to have in Smartphones or Tablets.

Once you download the app, select the sex, boy or girl, the app does the rest.

How to avoid PayPal fees for payment receipts?

Posted on 4:27 PM by Unknown

PayPal has modified the "Send Money" option as shown as above, before there were several options to choose from, now it has been simplified. To avoid fees for the receiver, use the second option, "I'm sending money to family or friends". I use this option to transfer money from one PayPal account to another.

Please note you need to have enough balance when you send money from your account.

How to fix Chrome browser error 'Error 15 (net::ERR_SOCKET_NOT_CONNECTED)'

Posted on 4:19 PM by Unknown
This error shows up once in a while in Chrome browser:

"Error 15 (net::ERR_SOCKET_NOT_CONNECTED)"

To fix this error just go to “Tools” --> “Clear Browsing Data” and select the cache and cookies. After which the website opens without a problem.

If the above fix doesn't work try this update from @ubuntuswitch:

Lasse Heindorff Kristiansen: For anyone Googling this later, so they will find the answer immediately:

1. Close whatever tabs you have open/save whatever needs to be saved, since Chrome might kill any open connections and/or crash.
3. Open a tab in Chrome and copy this into the address field: chrome://net-internals
4. Click the "Sockets" tab
5. Click "Close idle sockets" + "Flush socket pools"
