How to check for water leaks in toilets?

Posted on 8:50 AM by Unknown

Are you annoyed with high water bills? And there is nothing more annoying than a leak you can't identify that easily, one of them is the leak from the toilet tank and bowl. An unfixed toilet leak can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water in a year, enough water to do laundry for 10 months, according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But luckily there is a quick fix to solve this toilet leak problem.

Stephanie Thorton, a representative from EPA's Water Sense program, gives the following tip:
1. Put a few drops of food coloring (I used yellow coloring substance) in your toilet tank.
2. Check back after 15 minutes and if the color has seeped in, you have a leak.
I tested it in my home and it works as advertised, thankfully there is no leak for now.

Google Drive is Here

Posted on 10:02 AM by Unknown

It is finally here after a lengthy speculation. To start using Google Drive, go to http://drive.google.com to upgrade to 5GB from 1GB storage.

After that, you will be needing this program to sync with your PC:

https://tools.google.com/dlpage/drive/index.html?pli=1

After you install the Google Drive for PC, you can then select the folders and files you want to sync with the computer.

To increase the storage space from 5GB to 100GB, Google charges $4.99 a month or for even more storage space go to https://www.google.com/settings/storage/?hl=en?

Nice logo for Gideon Sundback in Google Australia

Posted on 8:12 PM by Unknown

Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, developed the first zipper around 1900s. He definitely deserves a logo for that, the whole fashion and clothing industry will be at a loss without zippers.

You can check it out here in Google Australia: http://www.google.com.au/

Hint: Pull the zipper down and release the mouse, you will see the Google results page.

Are you ready to switch from Incandescent or CFL bulbs to LED Bulbs?

Posted on 3:43 AM by Unknown

Though Philips introduced the bulb at a high price at, currently they are sold at $22.99 in Amazon. The price may look high but it saves energy in the long run.

From Phys.org article:
“For $25, or even $35, the bulb looks like a good investment compared to an incandescent bulb. It uses only 10 watts of power, meaning saves about $8 per year in electricity if it’s used four hours a day. It’s expected to last at least 30,000 hours, or 30 times longer than an incandescent. At four hours per day, that’s 20 years.
But the Philips bulb is not only up against $1 incandescent bulbs. CFL are nearly as energy efficient. They use about 15 watts for 60 watts worth of light. They’re much cheaper too, typically costing around $5. The Philips bulb looks odd too -the light-emitting surfaces are yellow when the bulb isn’t lit, yet shine white when it is.
The Philips bulb has some advantages over a CFL: It lasts three times longer and gives off a more natural-looking light. It doesn’t contain the toxic mercury vapor inside CFLs, which creates a minor hazard when they break.”

The LED bulbs last more than 20 years and have no toxic mercury content compared to the CFL bulbs, whose life is about 10 years. The energy usage for both these bulbs are good but the LED bulbs consume less energy (6 to 8 Watts) compared to CFL (13 to 15 Watts).

When CFL bulbs were introduced, I switched all of the bulbs in my home, the energy use dropped $20/month on an average. With LED bulbs I plan to switch, I can expect a longer life and see more drop in the energy costs and don’t have to worry about the toxic mercury content.

You can purchase these bulbs in Amazon.

Also, check the comparison between LED bulb vs CFL bulb vs Incandescent lamp, the savings are huge for LED bulbs. http://www.designrecycleinc.com/led%20comp%20chart.html

How to See Photos and Videos in the Comments area in Google+

Posted on 4:43 PM by Unknown

From

I saw the above photo in the comment area. Initially I thought Google+ added this new feature, then realized it was the Google+ Hover Zoom extension I added thanks to +archer rehcra. Now there is no need to click the link to see the photo in a new tab.

The extensions does lot of things besides the main Zoom feature, check it under the settings area according to +archer rehcra. The settings link is available in the home button in Google+. Click the gear icon and you will see Google+ Hover Zoom and settings as shown below, click the settings to add other features. If you enable the "show Video" in the "Other" tab, then you can see the video links in the comment area also.

You can download the extension here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/106681. It was built by +Sky Arrow.

Quote: Hugh MacLeod - Dare To Be Different

Posted on 3:34 PM by Unknown

Vive La Difference!
When others zig it's time to zag.  When the world around you says no, it's time to say YES!  You can follow the sheep, or you can get the flock out of the way, go off on your own and find a way to stand out from the crowd.  To get noticed.  To be the greatest at whatever you choose to be great at.

After all, it is much better to be seen, and not part of the herd...

Amazon Music Trade-In Store is Open

Posted on 6:40 AM by Unknown

I have bunch of CDs lying around in good condition, wanted to see how much prices it would get from Amazon Trade-in store. Amazon gives about $1.35 to $4.00 on an average. The low price is for less popular songs and for Album Sets, it fetches a higher price in the range of $11. Amazon doesn't give cash but gives a gift card instead.

Also, it is free shipping to Amazon, so it doesn't cost us to send it. If the CDs are not acceptable, they are sent back to us free of charge.

You can submit at this link here:  or Amazon Trade-in

All the local music trade-in stores will be affected, who offers similar prices for used CDs.

Now the app has added more features including available in multiple countries worldwide, off-line reading and translation option to read in foreign languages. Also, you can read your favorite RSS subscriptions inside Google Currents. I like reading some of the photo bloggers, Google Currents is a good platform to browse them.

We’ve heard you, and today we’re making Google Currents 1.1 available around the world. Hundreds of U.S. editions are now readable in your preferred language with a new publisher-selected translation feature, and local publishers can begin adding their content to the catalog through Google Currents Producer. Plus, a new dynamic sync feature improves your reading experience with fresh content wherever you are.
You can download the Android app at the Google Play link and the iPhone Version from iTunes link, and iPad version here.

How to delete Kindle eBooks in Amazon or move them to Trash folder?

Posted on 6:11 AM by Unknown
I downloaded lots of free books in Amazon, but I wanted to delete some of them completely from my account. So I did a search for it to see how this can be done, since there were no obvious links or buttons in either the device or in the cloud. Amazon stores the books either in the device you are reading or in the cloud (before it used to call them as "Archives").

Apparently, we can only move the selected books to the trash folder and keep them away from the "Device" and the "Cloud". Amazon's logic is suppose if we want to read the deleted books again, then we can move it from the trash folder to either the "Device" or to the "Cloud". But if we want to delete them permanently? There doesn't seem to be a solution in Amazon for now.

If you want to remove the books to the Trash folder, then follow the following steps:
1. Log on to your Amazon account.
2. Go to "Your Account"
3. Go to "Digital Content" section and click the "Your Collection" link.
4. Select the book you want to Delete or move them to trash.
5. Once you select the book a window pops open as shown below:
6. Click the "Move to trash" button.
7. The selected book is then removed from either the "Device" or from the "Cloud".
8. To see the trash folder, just scroll down the "View Your Collection" button at the top and select the "Trash" folder to see the books in the trash.

9. If you made a mistake or want to move the books from the trash folder back to the device, then go to the "Trash" folder and select the book and click the "Return to your Collection" button.
